Douko

The harvest season of Hobiki net-fishing was from July 21 to December 20. Since fishing took place at night, it was very cold and hard in winter.

How did you keep out the cold on the boat?

Mr. Nakamura:

We had a kind of heater, a brazier called Douko . Charcoal was put inside this. It became very hot. If we used it for a long time, it would scorch the boat itself.

Douko
Douko is a brazier used on the boat. Fishermen boiled the water scooped up from Kasumigaura to make tea. Since the water of Kasumigaura was good and sweeter than well water, they did not bring water from home. At the meal time during fishing, they often ate the box lunch they brought and tea made from the water of Kasumigaura. People said that douko was also used as a pillow when sleeping. It was really useful.
