Yokoda

Yokoda is like a strong bamboo basket. It was an indispensable tool for fishing.

The following is a conversation of a couple engaged in hobiki net-fishing.

“I'm home!”
“How was the day?”
“Not good.”
When there was a big catch, “What a haul!” he said loudly enough to be heard by his neighbors.

Then it was the wife who received the fish from the boat.
She rolled up her trousers and got into the water to take yokoda .
One yokoda can contain 10 to 15 kg of fish. Usually, there were five yokoda on a boat. Since freshwater fish tended to spoil rapidly, the fish caught were sometimes brought to the shore in the middle of fishing. Yokoda was strong and light. It must have been a very useful tool to carry fish.
