The upper and lower side panels stand from the bottom panel of a boat. The lower side panels are mostly under the water and have a wide angle to prevent rolling. The upper side panels are nearly perpendicular to the bottom panel. They are the broadside, or gunwale of the boat. |

The angle of the lower side panels of hobikisen is wide in order to prevent the boat from rolling by wind and to move the boat sideways. |

This is also used in the same manner for joining the upper and lower side panels. |
